I love to swim laps in the pool, so now I do my meditation while swimming laps. I find that the quietness of being in the water and the methodical rhythm of my breathing just naturally induces a meditative calmness for me. I usually like to swim the front crawl to one end followed by the breaststroke on the way back. Instead of using a mantra, I found that saying the number of the lap that I’m on helps my mind to clear out all extraneous thoughts. Although I’m not swimming very fast, I usually keep my heart rate between 120 and 130 beats per minute, so I am still getting some cardiovascular benefit. As I do each lap, I keep saying the number of that lap in my mind. For example, as I do lap 15, I say “fifteen” in my mind as I take each breath. It helps my mind focus and keeps me from thinking about other things. I’ve noticed that I’m completely present in the moment and able to feel each part of my body as it propels me gently through the water. I enjoy it so much that I usually swim a mile almost every day. If you like the water, give it a try!
